Clans, clan fights and the Elo ladder

The short version: A clan is a standing team inside a Discord server, with a captain, co-captains and a roster. Clans challenge each other to fights, both captains report the winner, and the result moves both clans on an Elo ladder. Achievements, clan cups and — if your server turns them on — seasons give that ladder a reason to be climbed all year. Clans also earn clan coins by playing and spend them on cosmetics; coins can’t be bought, sold or transferred and have no real-world value, and a clan’s rank moves only by winning fights.

Who this is for: Clan leaders, co-captains and members, and server admins deciding whether to switch clans on.

Tournaments are events: they start, they finish, and the bracket is done. Clans are what keeps a competitive server busy between events. They give members a group to belong to, a rivalry to care about and a ranking that changes every time two clans play. Everything on this page runs inside Discord through the /clan commands.

Creating and running a clan

Any member can start a clan with /clan create, which asks for a name and two choices. Visibility decides whether the clan’s chat channel is public (everyone can read it, only members can post) or private to members. Join policy decides whether anyone can walk in with /clan join or a captain must invite each new member.

  • /clan invite sends an invitation; the player accepts it from /clan my-invites.
  • /clan view shows a clan’s roster, rating and record; /clan list lists every clan in the server.
  • /clan leave leaves your clan; the captain can remove a member with /clan kick.

Clans have no size limit unless a server admin sets one. When the server sets a limit, every clan starts with that many places and can buy extra member slots on top with clan coins. A clan’s first rename is free; after that a captain or co-captain can rename it with /clan rename for 10,000 clan coins, and a server admin can rename any clan. The clan’s role and channel are renamed with it.

Captains and co-captains

Every clan has exactly one captain and any number of co-captains. Co-captains run the clan day to day alongside the captain: they can invite players, issue and accept fight challenges and promote members to co-captain. Two powers stay with the captain alone — removing a member and handing the clan over to someone else — and only the captain can demote a co-captain, so co-captains cannot strip each other. If a captain wants to step away, they transfer the captaincy rather than abandoning the clan.

Clan fights

A clan fight is a match between two clans, played however your game plays — a 5v5, a custom room, a best-of-three. Clutchat does not care how the game is played; it records who won.

  1. A captain or co-captain issues a challenge with /clan fight challenge.
  2. The other clan accepts with /clan fight accept. A shared fight channel is set up and both captains receive a DM with “we won” and “we lost” buttons.
  3. After the match, both sides report — from the DM or with /clan fight result. If the reports agree, the fight is complete and the ladder updates.
  4. If the reports conflict, the fight is disputed and posted to the server’s log channel, where a moderator awards it to one clan with a single click.

/clan fight active shows fights in progress and /clan fight history shows past results. A challenge that has not been accepted can be cancelled.

The Elo ladder

Every clan starts at 1,000 Elo. Winning a fight takes rating from the loser; how much depends on the gap between the two. Beating a clan rated far above you is worth a lot, beating one far below you is worth little, and losing to a much weaker clan costs the most. That is what makes the ladder hard to farm: the only way up is to beat clans at or above your level. /clan leaderboard shows the ladder for the server.

Seasons (optional)

Seasons are off unless a server manager turns them on, with /config season in Discord or under Settings, Clans in the server dashboard, choosing a length of 14, 30, 60 or 90 days. If your server turns seasons on, Elo resets each season and the top clans make the podium: when a season ends its final standings are frozen, the top three clans that played at least three fights take the podium, the winner earns the Season Champion badge, the top three earn clan coins (5,000, 3,000 and 1,500) and the champion a Champion card theme, and every clan starts the next season back at 1,000 Elo. The next season begins straight away. Each clan’s lifetime fight record is kept across seasons. /clan season shows the current table, how long is left and past podiums. With seasons off, the ladder simply keeps going and Elo carries on until an admin resets it.

Clan size

Clans can have any number of members unless the server sets a limit, from 1 to 100, with /config clan-limit or in the dashboard. With a limit in place a captain can add room with clan coins (/clan shop slots), and a clan already above a new limit keeps its members but cannot add more until it is back under it.

Achievements

Clans earn permanent badges for what they do on the ladder: a first win, a winning streak, a long record of victories, a high Elo, finishing a season at the top and winning a clan cup. /clan achievements shows the badges a clan has earned and how to earn the rest — two of them, for a 30-day check-in streak and for holding 50,000 coins, come from the clan coin side. Badges pay nothing; each is earned once and never expires.

Clan cups

A clan cup is a knockout tournament where the entrants are clans. A server manager opens a cup with /clan-admin cup-open, clans enter with /clan cup join (and can leave before it starts), and the manager seeds the field and starts it with /clan-admin cup-start. /clan cup bracket shows the entries and pairings. Cups are free to enter. Each cup match is a clan fight, reported the same way, and when the final is settled the champion and runner-up are announced to the server. The champion earns 1,000 clan coins and the runner-up 500 — fixed amounts, never collected from the other entrants.

Clan coins

Clan coins are a game currency that belongs to the clan, not to any one member. A new clan starts with 1,000. /clan coins balance shows the balance, and /clan coins income and /clan coins spends list every coin that came in or went out.

How coins are earned

  • The daily check-in. Any member can run /clan daily once a day for the clan. Checking in on consecutive days builds a streak that adds a little more each time, with milestone bonuses along the way.
  • Winning clan fights. Each win pays the winning clan 500 coins. A fight costs the loser Elo, never coins.
  • Weekly quests. /clan quests view shows three quests a week, the same for every clan in the server — win three fights, finish five, check in five times and so on. A captain or co-captain claims finished ones with /clan quests claim.
  • Weekly contracts. /clan contracts board lists this week’s goals. Leaders commit to up to three for free and the reward lands when the clan completes one.
  • Seasons and clan cups. The fixed podium and final rewards described above.

What coins are spent on

Everything has a fixed price shown before you confirm, and nothing is left to chance. Leaders spend coins on Clutch Card themes with /clan shop themes, a war horn that posts the clan’s battle cry once a day with /clan shop horn, a new role color with /clan color, a rename, extra member slots when the server sets a member limit, and clearing a player’s rejoin cooldown with /clan coins clear-cooldown.

What coins are not

Clan coins have no real-world value. They are earned only by playing: they cannot be bought with money, sold, transferred to another clan or exchanged for anything outside Clutchat. Trading them, or clans, for money is against the Terms of Service. Server admins can correct a clan’s balance, for example to undo abuse.

Practical advice

  • Keep the number of clans proportional to your active members. Ten clans of three people produce fewer fights than four clans of eight.
  • Agree on what a fight is — format, maps, roster size — in your server rules before the first challenge, so disputes are about facts rather than expectations.
  • Bind a log channel in /setup so disputed fights reach your moderators straight away.
