A community tournament has the same moving parts whatever the game: a sign-up list, a cut-off, a check of who actually arrived, a bracket, a stream of results, the occasional argument and a winner. Clutchat handles each of those inside Discord, using slash commands and buttons, and keeps the bracket as the single source of truth. Nobody has to maintain a spreadsheet, redraw an image or scroll back through a channel to find out who won round two.
Formats
- Single elimination
- Lose once and you are out. The fastest format and the right default for most open events; a sixteen-entrant bracket finishes in four rounds.
- Double elimination
- A first loss drops you into a losers bracket instead of eliminating you. More matches, but one bad game does not end anyone’s night.
- Round robin
- Everybody plays everybody. Standings are scored on wins, which suits small groups and league nights where every entrant should get the same number of games.
- Swiss
- A fixed number of rounds where entrants with similar records are paired against each other. It scales to large fields without the number of matches exploding.
Any of these can be head-to-head brackets or many-player matches, solo or in teams, chosen when you create it. For team events, organizers either let players register as pre-made teams or collect a pool of individual players and form teams from it — automatically, by shuffling the pool, or manually, by picking the players for each team.
Running one, step by step
- Create it.
/tournament-admin createopens a form for the name, game, format and size. Sensible defaults are filled in for the registration and check-in windows so a first event needs very little configuration. - Open registration. Players join with
/tournament registeror the register button on the announcement. If you want to review every sign-up, turn on approvals and each registration waits for an organizer instead of being accepted instantly. Invite player in/tournament-admin managesends a player a direct invitation by DM. - Check in. During the check-in window, registered players confirm they are present with the Check in button. Only checked-in entrants are placed in the bracket, which is what stops no-shows from leaving empty slots in round one.
- Generate the bracket. The organizer generates the bracket, round-one pairings go out to players by DM, and
/tournament bracketshows the current state to anyone in the server. - Play and report. After each match a player reports the result and the opponent confirms it. A confirmed result advances the winner automatically.
- Finish. The final result completes the tournament and the outcome is recorded in each player’s history and on the server leaderboard.
Results and disputes
Results come from the players, not from an organizer typing in scores. When both sides agree, nothing else is needed. When the two reports disagree, the match is marked as disputed and escalated: the players are asked for evidence and an organizer or moderator settles it by awarding the match to one side. The rest of the bracket keeps moving while one match is being reviewed.
Unreported matches are handled too. If a match runs out of time with nobody reporting, the higher seed — the lower seed number — is advanced, so a single absent pair cannot freeze a round. Organizers can also force a round forward when they need to.
Organizer tools
Creating, starting and running an event happens in /tournament-admin, which Discord hides from members without the Manage Server permission. To let your organizer role use it, open Server Settings → Integrations → Clutchat and allow the role.
/tournament browselists the server’s tournaments, or only the ones you have joined;/tournament viewshows the details, rules, participants and bracket of one.- Roster commands add a substitute to a team or remove one, so a late drop does not forfeit the whole team.
- Announcements and reminders notify entrants before registration closes and before check-in starts.
- Cancel tournament in
/tournament-admin manageends an event cleanly and tells everyone who entered.
Recurring schedules
A tournament that happens every month should not be rebuilt every month. Pick the monthlyRepeat option in /tournament-admin create, and theSchedule button in /tournament-admin manage lets you pause, resume or cancel it — the schedule saves a tournament’s settings and creates each new edition on time. Pausing a schedule over a holiday keeps the settings; cancelling it stops future editions without touching past results.
Tournaments on the website
The tournament directory on clutchat.com lists events that are taking sign-ups, live or finished. Each tournament page shows the format, the size, the registration and check-in times, the bracket or standings, and the match pages where participants report scores. Anyone can browse without an account; signing in is only needed to register, check in or report.
Limits worth knowing
- The bot records the results players report. It cannot see inside your game, so a screenshot of the result screen remains the best evidence in a dispute.
- A tournament belongs to the server it was created in; its organizers and moderators are the people who settle its disputes.
- Clutchat keeps score; it does not run anything outside the game itself. Rules about eligibility, conduct and recognition for winners are set by your organizers.
